Presenting the Music, Murals & Margaritas Festival

Musicc

City of Offernley recently issued the following announcement.

The City of Fernley in partnership with Sierra Arts Foundation presents the inaugural Music, Murals and Margarita Festival May 19-21, 2022.

WHEN: Thursday, May 19, 2022 - Saturday, May 21, 2022

WHAT: A three-day festival featuring local, national and international mural artists, musicians and margaritas!

WHERE: 20 public accessed walls throughout the City of Fernley & the Fernley Depot.

WHY:  Fernley is at a beginning stage in its growth as a destination for arts and culture. Along with the Main Street Art Park, this Festival will bring an array of diverse talents to produce colorful public art. Fernley will become the third City on I-80 to have a Mural Festival in the last 5 years. Soon, tens of thousands of travelers will have an outdoor art gallery to stop at and enjoy. Reno’s more than 200 murals have brought out pride and a sense of achievement in their city. Both Reno and Elko have seen increased tourist activity and local business engagement due to the Mural Festivals. This is a jumpstart leading to significant change, by devising and carrying out creative neighborhood-building programs.

We recognize the importance of public spaces being an agent for people coming together in creation and celebration of culture. We will collaborate with local business owners and private residents to locate walls that once muraled will strengthen neighborhoods. Our focus will be centered in the downtown corridor and spread to all parts of town. It has been shown in cities across the country that adding large scale public art increases the sense of ownership, can spur confidence in the neighborhood’s future and encourage property investment. This, in turn, creates civic pride, resulting in a safer, more economically productive, and healthy civic community.

This inaugural 3-day festival will bring beautiful art to public places. But more importantly, it also will create collective identity and serve as a catalyst for continued revitalization, crossing economic, social and cultural boundaries.
