Since its inception in 2020, some of Roseman’s inaugural Hero Scholars are graduating. Among them is Shabnum Hamidi. As of February 16, 2023, Hamidi received her bachelor’s degree in nursing along with the BSN class of 2023 and is planning to return to her home state in California and work at a pediatrics hospital.

Before Hamidi enrolled in Roseman’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, she found her inspiration and drive to give to others when she volunteered on a mission trip to Nicaragua. While she was taking vitals and doing what she could for the local community “I just fell in love with the kids.” Hamidi said. This trip inspired her to become a pediatric nurse.

After her mission trip, Hamidi volunteered at Stanford Children’s Hospital and shortly after enrolled in Roseman’s nursing program. While keeping an open mind during her various clinic rotations and experiences, she would always come back to pediatrics.

“My pediatric rotation was the one clinical where I could be there for a full shift, but I just wanted to stay for an extra hour!” Hamidi said.

Located at our South Jordan, Utah campus, Hamidi participated in many clubs, including the Student Nurses Association, Honor Society, the Maternal and Neonatal Student Association and the Critical Care Student Association. With a Hero Scholarship, Hamidi was able to spend time focusing on her studies and giving back to the community.

Her involvement gave her many opportunities to attend conventions and network with other nursing schools and hospitals. “Being able to rub elbows with NICU nurses and PICU nurses and pick their brain and get advice as a new graduate has been very impactful,” Hamidi said.

Hamidi’s participation in the newly founded Maternal and Neonatal Student Association has provided her the opportunity to complete certifications to build her resume to stand out from other new graduates.

“My experience has been great at Roseman,” Hamidi said. “I’ve had amazing professors and I’ve learned so much in such a short period of time”

Last year, Utah received an influx of refugees that immigrated from Afghanistan. This gave Hamidi the opportunity to volunteer at a refugee drive as a translator. Hamidi’s family immigrated from Afghanistan, and she learned to speak Farsi growing up, and in Utah, Farsi is a rare language to speak.

“I’m so thankful that I was able to donate my time to offer my translating services to them,” Hamidi said. “I was able to spend my time giving back to the community instead of having to work to pay for my tuition.”

Aside from spending her time volunteering, Hamidi had more time to focus on her studies.

“This program is fast and hard. Having that time to study to ensure I got that 90% on every test made all the difference in the world,” Hamidi said.

Hamidi was one of the first students to receive the Hero scholarship during the 2020 pandemic. “And for that, I’m so grateful for Roseman and my donor, Board of Trustee member Annette Logan-Parker,” Hamidi said. The financial support from the Hero scholarship gave Hamidi the boost she needed to settle herself into the rigorous nursing program and engage with her community. Instead of focusing on how to pay for tuition, Hamidi was able to focus on school and complete the BSN program.

“And I hope, in the future, I can give back to future Roseman students and stay in the Roseman Family,” Hamidi said. “I’m not going graduate and never talk to Roseman or come back to Roseman; I want to give back. I’m currently planning to apply for the Nurse Practitioner program at Roseman, so I can continue my Roseman journey and further my education.”
