H

June Sylvester Saraceno has accepted the position as director for the low-residency MFA in Creative Writing. She begins her new role at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe on July 1.

Since she launched the English program at Sierra Nevada College in 2002, Saraceno has continually added to the cultural and literary offerings in Lake Tahoe. Through the years, she established the BFA in Creative Writing, the Sierra Nevada Review annual literary publication, the Distinguished Visiting Writer position, the journalism program and the Writers in the Woods reading series. She has taught a variety of classes from British literature to poetry since 1987.

Brian Turner, current director of the MFA in Creative Writing Program at Sierra Nevada University, recently announced that he will be stepping down as director this summer. He will be continuing to mentor students and teach courses in the program.

“My goal is to continue to grow the phenomenal program Brian Turner built with the focus and passion that has always characterized it,” Saraceno said. “We have an exceptional community of writers – from faculty mentors, to students, to graduates. I’m looking forward to working with Dr. Jill Heaton and others at the University of Nevada, Reno for a synergistic merge that will benefit all.”

Saraceno has been honored by Nevada Humanities for “Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities” for her dedicated work at SNC. She received another honor when she was accepted into a month-long artists’ residency program at the Camac Art Center in Marnay-sur-Seine, France. Her most recent full-length collections of poetry is The Girl from Yesterday (Cherry Grove). Her novel Feral, North Carolina, 1965, was listed by Buzzfeed as one of 18 must-read books from independent presses when it was released and received other warm reviews. She is also the author of two other full-length collections of poetry and a poetry chapbook.

The University of Nevada, Reno is committed to the low-residency MFA-CW program, and looks forward to its continued success post acquisition of Sierra Nevada University. Change of Ownership occurs on July 1, 2022.
